It may not be as celebrated as it's paella or its oranges, but Valencia has been producing wine for millennia. 85% of vine growers are members of cooperatives, particularly in Alto Turia, northeast of Valencia city, Valentino, east of the Turia river and the traditional heart of Valencia, sunny Moscatel, open to the Mediterranean breezes. The most southerly and in many ways the most fascinating zone is Clariano - a striking zone of masias, large country houses with estates attached, in contrast to so many regions with minifundia, where growers subsist on tiny vineyards.
This is where El Enhebro resides, where Monastrell and Garnacha Tintorera prevail.
