Northwest of the Castilla y Leon, this DO lies in the mountains marking the border between Galicia and the Meseta Central. Many of its old vineyards are looked upon by those walking the pilgrimage route of the El Camino de Santiago. Split into Bierzo Alto and Bierzo Bajo, the maritime influence here allows for top Mencia to be produced on the steep stony slopes.
In the west of Bierzo near Villafranca del Bierzo, and also on the direct path of the pilgrimage, Luna Beberide creates Mencia and Godello in Bierzan style with an experimental edge with very old vines and old stony soils.
