Tenuta Moriniello, a certified organic farm since 1999, is run by Luigi and Tania Morinello. The 20-hectare vineyards are located in the heart of Tuscany in the hilltop town of Montaione. It is almost surreally beautiful with cypress tress, rolling hills and neat rows of vines. Sangiovese absolutely thrives here on the calcareous clays (the alberese of Chianti Classico), on steep slopes at very high altitudes (500 metres).
The Chianti is made from hand-picked grapes which are destemmed and undergo 3 weeks of slow maceration. The vinification takes place in vitrified cement tanks with an extra 6 months bottle age following fermentation. On the nose it’s classic chianti with cherry, red currant, blackberry and a juicy, structured palate. It pairs well with cured meats and cheeses, pasta with meat sauces and, of course, Bistecca Fiorentina. The “Fortebraccio” is sourced from the highest plots and benefits from 12 months in French barriques (1/3 new). Bigger and bolder, it has oriental spice, tobacco, and leather alongside jam, blackberries, plum and a hint of dried herbs (sage and bay).
