Tuscany - the gently rolling hills dotted with vineyards and olive groves are a kind of earthly paradise, an immense garden in which time appears to have paused to stop and wonder. Among these hills in the Val di Chiana sits the estate of Camperchi and 140 ha of manicured vineyards. Four of the seventeen vineyards (all individually named) are planted with Sangiovese on the sparse clay limestone soils typical of central Tuscany. The winery sits atop the hill where legend says the temple of Hercules was erected, and the Camperchi team certainly channel his vigour into their wines.
The Chianti ‘prima selezione’ is 100% organically produced with predominantly Sangiovese responsible for its typically robust structure and subtle aromatics. This wine is a classic, young Sangiovese fermented entirely in stainless steel to preserve the textbook aromatics of violet, sweet spice, blueberry, tomato, blackberry and black pepper. Fine tannins and bright acidity complete the picture and drive a lovely, generous finish. It’s the perfect weekday red pizza and pasta and is plucky enough to deserve a place at the dining table on Sunday.
