Having been at the forefront of saving the Timorasso grape from extinction, it is no surprise that when the next best Timorasso producer came along, we were there to sweep him up. Growing up watching the esteemed Walter Massa, Lorenzo Bottazzi now brings his own flare to his 150ha estate of Monterosso in Tortona. Currently studying for the Master of Wine, Lorenzo has a bredth of knowledge that he embues on his trio of unoaked Timorassos. Using only natural seaweed fertiliser, the vineyard is organic and minimal intervention is carried out.
The Piccolo derthona is young and fresh with only 8 months in steel tanks and little yeast contact. The 'Monterosso' is a huge step up, with 2 years in steel on the skins and regular battonage and some bottle age, the wine is full-bodied with glorious complex floral, herbal and tropical notes as well as a marked saltiness. The 'Italo' completes the trio with further skin contact, making this gold wine sing with honey and graphite on top of the chalky, herbal character below. Having only started in 2016, we are very excited to see these wines mature.
