In 1968, around 120 producers from Friuli Venezia Giulia came together to collaborate on viticultural best practice and to share the financial burden of coaxing the very best from this unique region’s huge range of native varietals. Fifty years later and many have lived to see their dream come alive with weather stations, consultants, and a code of ethical sustainability that has few peers in Italy. Friuli, with its high rainfall (1200 mm / year) and striated soil (the famous layer-cake ‘ponca’), presents challenges but also incredible opportunity with a range of superb local varieties. We have always championed ‘tomorrow’s heroes’ and Cormons is absolutely ‘one to watch’.
The Friulano has a long, slow maceration and 7 months on fine lees to craft a lovely white with dried herbs, gooseberry and toasted walnuts and hazelnuts. The Refosco, another native grape, has over a year in large oak and is redolent of spice, black and red fruit and vibrant tannins. Alongside these, the Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio and Cab Franc all punch above their price and offer an elegant twist on classic flavours. A special shout out for the Cormorano Bianco Brut which makes an excellent alternative to Prosecco.
