A rambling viticultural backwater little changed by the passage of time, the Abruzzo is sparsely populated, exceptionally beautiful, and home to just two varieties: Trebbiano and Montepulciano. The former rarely distinguishes itself but Montepulciano, on the other hand, is capable of true greatness.
The problem in the Abruzzo is that the culture of co-operative winemaking combined with potentially staggering yields rob the wines of any concentration. Things are changing, finally, and both Fratelli Barba and Inama are leading the charge.
